IP cameras can remotely be viewed over StrideLinx's VPN connection to see what's happening at a machine, without needing to be physically present at the machine.
How to choose an IP camera
Due to the wide-range of implementations and constant development at camera manufacturers, we cannot provide any specific recommendations or guarantee specific models to work. While in general any IP camera will work over VPN, to be absolutely sure that everything works as expected, especially when using an HTTP service, it is strongly recommended to test.
Some manufacturers that you might want to take a look at are: Hikvision (e.g. model DS-2CD2045FWD-I or DS-2DE2A204IW-DE3), Hanwha Vision (e.g. model Wisenet LNV-6012R), Reolink, Axis, Wenglor, and Cognex. Additionally, keep the following requirements in mind:
- When using a browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox:
- This requires the IP camera to run a local web server. Web servers that require a browser plugin to work are incompatible with the HTTP service, but can still be accessed over VPN.
- When using the manufacturer's own (mobile) app:
- This requires the app to allow you to manually enter the camera's IP address to connect. Scan or search functionalities will generally not work over VPN.
How to remotely connect to an IP camera
Once you've registered your StrideLinx router to the StrideLinx Cloud and connected your IP camera to one of the LAN ports, you're ready to remotely access it. You can then access the IP camera in different ways:
Using a browser - HTTP service
The HTTP service is the easiest method to use and is compatible with most web servers.
This requires the IP camera to run a local web server. Web servers that require a browser plugin to work are incompatible with the HTTP service, but can still be accessed using the VPN method below.
- Make sure that the camera's IP address is in the same range as the StrideLinx router's LAN IP address.
- Create and use an HTTP service.
Using a browser - VPN
If the HTTP service doesn't work, this VPN method can be used to remotely connect to your IP camera.
This requires the IP camera to run a local web server.
- Make sure that the camera's IP address is in the same range as the StrideLinx router's LAN IP address.
- Set up a VPN connection to your StrideLinx router.
- Open a new tab in your browser and enter your camera's IP address.
Using the manufacturer's app
Some manufacturers develop their own specialized app to view the camera settings and image.
This requires the app to allow you to manually enter the camera's IP address to connect. Scan or search functionalities will generally not work over VPN.
- Make sure that the camera's IP address is in the same range as the StrideLinx router's LAN IP address.
- Set up a VPN connection to your StrideLinx router.
- Open the manufacturer's app and enter your camera's IP address.
